Prince Harry seems to be growing up quickly. The 23-year-old royal has been serving on the front lines in the fight against the Taliban, it was revealed Thursday.

Word of Prince Harry’s service with the British Army in Afghanistan broke after a news embargo between the Ministry of Defense and major news organizations was violated.

Harry, a lieutenant in the Blues and Royals regiment, has been active in making airstrikes on Taliban positions and going out on foot patrols since December, according to the Ministry.

His planned deployment was not reported previously under a pool agreement in hopes of reducing the risk and protecting the prince– who is third in line to the throne– and his regiment from being targeted.

On Thursday, the news blackout ended abruptly when reports of the prince’s deployment were leaked by an Australian magazine and a German newspaper, and later reported on a U.S. website, the Drudge Report.

Military commander Gen. Richard Dannatt said he was "very disappointed" and that Harry’s "conduct on operations in Afghanistan has been exemplary."
