Eddie Murphy To Star In ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Revival
Following the latest Hollywood sequel trend, Paramount Pictures is reportedly planning to release a fourth installment of 1980s blockbuster "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise by 2010.
Rumor is that actor/comedian Eddie Murphy, who starred in the original movies as Detroit detective Alex Foley, approached the Viacom Inc-owned studio with the revival proposal, probably inspired by the success of the new "Indiana Jones" installment.
According to Variety, "Rush Hour" director Brett Ratner is in talks with Paramount to helm the flick. The movie, which will be produced by Lorenzo DiBonaventura, will most likely start shooting in 2009 with a release date for the summer of 2010. No writer has yet been assigned for the project.
Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original "Beverly Hills Cop" trilogy with late partner Don Simpson, will not be actively involved in the new film, Variety said.
The first "Beverly Hills Cop" grossed $316 million worldwide in 1984, kicking off two sequels. All together, the three flicks raked in $712.9 million worldwide through the last release in 1994.
Murphy can next be seen in "Meet Dave" due in July, while Ratner is currently developing the Hugh Hefner biopic "Playboy" for Universal, for which Hefner himself is said to have approached "Iron Man" star, Robert Downey Jr. to take over the leading role.
