BRITISH police last night arrested Batman star Christian Bale over assault allegations made by his mother and sister.

Police sources quoted by the Press Association news agency said that the 34-year-old was detained on suspicion of assault, which is alleged to have happened in a suite at London’s plush Dorchester Hotel on Sunday.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said a 34-year-old man was arrested after turning up at a police station and was being questioned. They refused to divulge his identity, in line with force policy.

Despite the allegations, police allowed Bale to attend the British premiere of The Dark Knight, in which he stars alongside the late Australian actor Heath Ledger.

Britain’s The Sun newspaper said Bale’s mother, Jenny, 61, and sister Sharon, 40, contacted police in Hampshire, where they live, on Monday to lodge a complaint.

Defending the decision to let Bale attend the premiere, a source told the newspaper: "It would have been wrong to wreck the premiere over a complaint which we do not know yet is founded in truth. Mr Bale will be contacted at the earliest opportunity and be asked to provide an account of what happened."

At the film premiere, Bale paid tribute to Ledger, 28, who died in January from an accidental overdose.

"He did an incredible job with The Joker … I enjoyed watching him perform," the BBC quoted him as saying.

Bale joined co-stars Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart for the premiere.
